Life's Like That

Make Someone's Day

by Jerry Bullock

There is an old story that I’m sure you have heard, but I’m going to tell it anyway. Picture a typical Sunday morning in Anytown, USA. “Get up, Johnny/ It’s time to get ready for church.” There is no sound from the bedroom, so Mom calls again, “Johnny, I said it is time to get up and get ready for church.” This time there is a muffled, “I don’t want to go.” Mom is insistent now and heads for the bedroom. “Johnny,” she says, “you have to get up and you have to go … you are the pastor.”

Well, we all have mornings like that. We turn over and wonder if it is really necessary to face another day. Some will turn back over and try to go back to sleep. Our society puts so much pressure on us to do more and sometimes we just want to shut off the machine and let the world go by without us.

The trouble is we are all in this thing together and the rats will continue the race whether we are in it or not. It seems better to me to make a decision to go on, jump in and make a difference. A friend of mine recently told me the story of standing on the ramp, guarding an airplane.

It was cold and the hours were long. When the time came for his relief, there was no one to relieve him and he asked why he had to stay. In his words he said, “The sergeant promised me relief would come and then he said, remember you are making a difference.”

Our goal each day should be to make a difference. Another way to say it is to be a blessing to someone. This will not happen by accident. We have to do it on purpose, based on decisions we make as we go through the day. A little prayer, “God make me a blessing to someone today,” won’t hurt. Start the day with “Praise God, it is morning!” Don’t do as some do and start out with “ Oh, God, it’s morning again.” Give thanks for every day the Lord gives you.

Now you are ready to go and be a blessing, to make a difference. Remember the first thing is the decision; now let’s put it into action:

  • Put a smile on your face. The Stamps Baxter Quartet used to sing; “Give the world a smile each day, helping someone on life’s way …” Smiles are contagious.
  • Look for needs. Be aware of people around you and show kindness wherever you can. If nothing else it will surprise the grouchiness out of them.
  • Say thank you. You have probably seen the commercial on TV where a simple “thank you” changes the whole dynamic of a difficult situation. It really does, by the way, and it does not cost you a thing.
Well, that gives us a good start. Now it is your turn. Go ahead, get up and go make someone’s day.
